Language
I spent most of my childhood in Taiwan, as a result I am fairly fluent in Mandarin and Taiwanese.  I would be happy to use my languages with parents who would prefer to communicate with either Mandarin or Taiwanese.  However, I choose to teach in English, because I am most familiar with musical terminologies in English, and wouldn’t wish to mistranslate any important musical concepts to the students.

Animals
My piano studio is also my home.  I have two cats, and they will likely be hanging out during lessons.  If you have any allergies to cats, please beware!  Come prepared.

Lesson Cancellation and Make-up Lessons Policy:
Private lessons will be made up if the teacher cancels the lesson.  Make-up lessons are given depending on the weekly schedule. Please contact me to reschedule a canceled lesson. Though I will attempt to schedule a make-up time, make-up lessons are not guaranteed.

Lessons may be canceled due to snow or emergency.  Please check the website for emergency announcements.  I will not call each individual student. Make-up lessons due to snow or emergency will be offered.

Student absence from group lessons will not be made up.
Scheduled make-up lessons missed by a student will not be made up.

Group Lessons
Group Lessons are held subject to enrollment, fees are due at the beginning of the month with private lesson fees.  Lessons may be canceled if they do not meet the minimum enrollment (if too many students cancel prior to class).  In the event that a group lesson is canceled, refunds will be issued.

Refund Policy
Payments are non-refundable, with the exception of a canceled group lesson.

Group Lessons Cancellation Policy
Group lessons may be canceled if they do not meet the minimum enrollment. Refunds will be issued if the class is cancelled.

Teaching the willing
Learning is most rewarding for both the teacher and the student, if the student has the desire to learn.  For this reason, I will only teach students that have expressed sincere interest in playing the piano.  If necessary, I would recommend that the prospective student observe a few lessons before beginning studies.  If you are a parent and wish to begin music lessons for your child, be aware of who really wants music lessons.  For younger students, I will request to teach the parent for a few weeks, while the child observes.

Open classes
Piano lessons are open for observations.  This is done for a few different reasons.  First, it will allow new students to see what the lessons are like, and determine if it truly is something they desire.  The waiting student and parent can observe a lesson from a different vantage point, which may shine some light on their own lessons, such as when to take notes, for example.  The student in the lesson has a chance to play in front of other people, without the pressure of a real audience.  Students can also listen to other students’ playing, which can help them discover new concepts to improve their own playing.

Participation of parents
I will ask the parents to fully participate in the student’s piano lesson.  This includes note-taking, and making a list of questions, if necessary.  For some students, I may also choose to teach the parents, and so the parents will be asked to play at the lesson.  Parents are an important role in the Suzuki Method. Without your participation, the method would become lop-sided and unbalanced, which does not contribute to proper cultivation of music learning.

Also…

Patience is important in my studio.  Each student learns at his or her own pace, and it is unrealistic and unfair to expect every student to excel at the same speed.  Please do not compare one student to another; we’re simply not oranges and oranges.

I value respect between the teacher and student, and will treat you as I wish to be treated.  I will be sincere with my words – whether they are words of praise or constructive criticisms.  I hope to teach my lessons creatively, and welcome suggestions and comments from parents and students.  Most of all, I aim to keep my lessons very, very fun, because if it isn’t fun, nothing else really matters.
